Differentiation of skull morphology and cranial kinesis in common toads

چکیده

Abstract We examined the cranial morphology and kinesis of common toads Bufo bufo B. spinosus with micro-computed tomography geometric morphometrics compared results published data for related species in a phylogenetic context. The significantly diverge skull shape. is shorter higher, ventral arm squamosal bone jaw articulation point positioned perpendicular to braincase, comparison more lateral position . In either species, females have snout higher wider at that posteriorly, conspecific males. High variation amount ossification was recorded both ranging from scarcely ossified loosely connected bones highly firmly bones. also found shape inferred kinetic properties are variable across Bufonini tribe. However, sample sizes mostly small intraspecific high, which might compromise analyses. Overall, suggest developmental plasticity produces high kinesis, affecting individuals’ feeding performances. At population level, this supports an efficient exploitation habitat may promote morphological adaptation changing environment.

Cranial kinesis in gekkonid lizards

Cranial kinesis was studied in two species of gekkonid lizard, Gekko gecko and Phelsuma madagascariensis, using cineradiography and electromyography. The skull of these geckoes showed the three types of kinesis described by Versluys at the beginning of this century: streptostyly, mesokinesis and metakinesis. In accordance with the later model of Frazzetta, the skull of these animals can be mode...

Cranial kinesis in palaeognathous birds.

Cranial kinesis in birds is induced by muscles located caudal on the cranium. These forces are transferred onto the moveable parts of the skull via the Pterygoid-Palatinum Complex (PPC). This bony structure therefore plays an essential role in cranial kinesis. In palaeognathous birds the morphology of the PPC is remarkably different from that of neognathous birds and is thought to be related to...

Cranial kinesis in geckoes: functional implications.

Although it is generally assumed that cranial kinesis is a plesiomorphic characteristic in squamates, experimental data tend to contradict this hypothesis. In particular, coupled kinesis (i.e. streptostyly and mesokinesis) presumably arose independently in only a limited number of highly specialised groups. In this study, we investigated cranial kinesis in one of the most specialised of these g...

Cranial Kinesis in Lepidosaurs: Skulls in Motion

This chapter reviews various aspects of cranial kinesis, or the presence of moveable joints within the cranium, with a concentration on lepidosaurs. Previous studies tend to focus on morphological correlates of cranial kinesis, without taking into account experimental evidence supporting or refuting the presence of the various forms of cranial kinesis in these taxa. By reviewing experimental an...
